zkSync Era: Production halted on Christmas, more inside

  • The latest outage disabled block production for close to five hours.
  • This was the second network outage in eight days.

Popular layer-2 (L2) blockchain zkSync Era fixed a network glitch, one that disabled block production for close to five hours, as per an admission by the network developers on social platform X.

Another glitch on zkSync Era

The team stated that one of the network’s automated safety protocols was impacted by a bug in the server. However, the same was fully resolved.

zkSync Era assured its users that a post-mortem report detailing the cause of the outage would be provided soon.

Examining the blockchain’s status page, AMBCrypto noticed an “operational” label against the zkSync Era mainnet. About half-an-hour before this writing, the status was “major outage.”

AMBCrypto found that as per zkSync Era’s block explorer, the last transaction was processed on the 25th of December at 10:53 UTC. Additionally, the last batch submitted to the Ethereum [ETH]  network was at 10:53 UTC.

The incident marked the second disruption in operations for zkSync Era in eight days. Block production was last halted on the 16th of December.

zkSync Era puts up a decent performance since launch

Launched earlier in the year, zkSync Era was the first Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible zero-knowledge rollup (zk-rollup) to launch on mainnet.

Since then, it has steadily risen through the ranks, surpassing competitors like Starknet and Polygon zkEVM.

According to AMBCrypto’s analysis of L2Beat data, zkSync Era had the fourth-highest total value locked (TVL) of any Ethereum scaling solution, at around $573 million, at press time.

This equated to a little more than a 3% share of the total funds deposited on L2 networks.

Moreover, the blockchain maintained a decent transaction throughput of 10 transactions per second (TPS) all this while. In fact, it was the fastest Ethereum L2 in the past 24 hours, with a TPS of 14.26.
